Seema Antil gets gold

BIRMINGHAM: Seema Antil registered a season best of 57.67 metres while winning the discus event in the UK Jumps and Throws Festival at the Alexander Stadium here on Sunday.

The Indian record holder (64.64m) achieved the winning distance on her fourth attempt. She had a previous best of 56.88m for the season.

The competition was ordinary with Englishwoman Eden Francis recording 55.91 for the silver and Philippa Roles taking the bronze with 54.03. The leading Indian discus thrower for the season, Krishna Poonia, did not compete.

Gold for Naik

India had another gold when Kashinath Naik threw the javelin to a distance of 73.26m. The surprise in this event was the eighth-place finish for National record holder Anil Kumar Singh with a poor 64.76m.

Triple-jumper Amarjeet Singh added to the Indian gold collection, but with another mediocre performance. He had 15.35m in a contest in which none of the others crossed 15m.

Shocking was the seventh-place finish of National record holder Renjith Maheswary with a mere 13.89m, the poorest in his career including his junior days. That was the only valid jump Renjith had in his first major competition this season after a brief lay-off. He had four fouls in his series. He passed his last attempt.

In women’s triple jump, M.A. Prajusha finished fifth with a jump of 12.66m. Local athlete Natalie Williams took the gold with 13.27m.

On Friday, Susmita Singha Roy came fifth in women’s long jump with 5.57m. Amy Woodman of England won at 6.12m.
