AIADMK urged to review poll boycott decision

Special Correspondent

COIMBATORE: The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) should re-consider its decision to boycott by-elections to the five Assembly seats, as it will only benefit those whom the party has accused of indulging in malpractices during previous elections, CPI State secretary D. Pandian said here on Sunday.

Addressing a city unit workers’ meeting, Mr. Pandian said all the reasons cited by the AIADMK for the boycott were acceptable. But, the boycott would ultimately benefit only the wrong-doers, the CPI said.

The AIADMK and the MDMK had decided to fight against certain practices by remaining outside the electoral field. But the Communist parties wanted to get into this field and combat them, he said.

Communist Party of India (Marxist) State secretary N. Varadarajan in Theni said the party would seek the support of the AIADMK and other parties in the by-elections. The Central and State governments had betrayed the people of Tamil Nadu on Mullaperiyar river issue, which he said, would get a special focus in the election campaign in the Cumbum constituency.

“We will insist the Centre to implement Supreme Court verdict,” he added.
