Where did the water on moon come from?

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: It is not just that the Chandrayaan-1 has found traces of water on the moon. The bigger question is how that water might have been produced and where it could have accumulated.

The water could come from different sources. Countless comets and meteors that have crashed into the moon over billions of years might have brought water.

Last year, researchers published a paper in Nature about water contained in tiny beads of lunar volcanic glasses that were collected by two Apollo missions.

The discovery suggested that water might exist deep inside the moon.

Now the Chandrayaan-1 data provides support for the idea that solar wind, made up mostly of hydrogen ions, interacts with oxygen in the lunar soil and rocks to produce water. When hydrogen and oxygen atoms bond, hydroxyl is generated; addition of one more hydrogen atom results in water.

Much of that water may be lost to space but some of it could be transported along the surface till it becomes trapped at the bottom of icy cold polar craters that are never exposed to sunlight.

“If the water molecules are as mobile as we think they are — even a fraction of them — they provide a mechanism for getting water to those permanently shadowed craters,” observed Dr. Carle Pieters of Brown University in the U.S, principal investigator for the Moon Mineralogy Mapper (M3) on the Chandrayaan-1.

Water ice

Two U.S. spacecraft that travelled to the moon in the 1990s found indications that there was indeed water ice at the bottom of polar craters, but the evidence is disputed.

The radars on the Chandrayaan-1 and the U.S. Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO), which is now circling the moon, may shed new light on this issue.

In addition, the U.S. plans to send the heavy upper stage of a rocket as well as a shepherding spacecraft hurtling into a crater at the moon’s south pole on October 9.

By analysing the debris that is thrown up into sunlight, scientists hope to find signs of any water that might lurk there.

Besides, the M3, which depends on reflected light, can pick up signals for water and hydroxyl from just the top few millimetres of the soil.

Whether water has percolated deeper into the soil is not known. Here too, the radars on the Chandrayaan-1 and the LRO could help.

Pokhran II: “no scientific basis for doubts

Atomic Energy Commission Chairman Anil Kakodkar with R. Chidambaram, Principal Scientific Adviser to the Union government, at a press conference on Pokhran-II tests, in Mumbai on Thursday.

MUMBAI: Refuting the doubts raised recently over the success of the May 1998 Pokhran II tests, Anil Kakodkar, Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) and R. Chidambaram, AEC Chairman in 1998 and now Principal Scientific Adviser to the Union government, said on Thursday that the controversy was “unnecessary” and the doubts had “no scientific basis.”

In defence of the accuracy of the tests, Mr. Chidambaram made an elaborate power point presentation to the press and members of the scientific community. He sought to clear doubts about the test yield raised by scientists K. Santhanam, Project Leader, Pokhran-II, and P.K. Iyengar, a former AEC Chairman.

Santhanam’s contention

Mr. Santhanam had spoken about the differences in the yield estimates of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC).

He had contended, “The fission bomb yield from DRDO’s seismic instrumentation was 25 kiloton (kt).”

In his response, Mr. Chidambaram clarified, “The BARC estimate of the yield for the fission device is 15 kiloton [not 25 kiloton] and for the thermonuclear device 45 kiloton. One of the methods used for the estimation of the device yield was close-in acceleration measurement, for which both DRDO and BARC had set up instrumentation. It soon became apparent that after discussion among the two groups of specialists that the DRDO data had anomalies and had to be rejected and that the BARC data, which had the expected waveforms, would be accepted.”

Dr. Kakodkar added there were different methods to find out the yields’ seismic measurement, instrumentation, radiochemical, actual simulation of ground motion, among others.

“These are all different disciplines; there are different groups which do it. BARC is a large institution and assessment is done by different expert groups.”

To Mr. Santhanam’s yardstick of the diameter of the crater, Mr. Chidambaram said: “The fission device was emplaced in rhyolite medium whereas the fusion device was emplaced in the pink granite medium. The medium for the Pokhran-I test was shale and sandstone. The geology in the Pokhran region is inhomogeneous. The propagation of the shock wave is affected by every interface. 3-D simulation calculations of the rock mechanical effects, done by BARC scientists, after considering all these factors accounted for the observed effects in the thermonuclear test.” He said he failed to understand what scaling laws Mr. Santhanam had used.

On the question of finding trace-levels of radioisotopes in Apsara, a pure fission reactor, Mr. Chidambaram stated, “The tail of the fission neutron spectrum extends to beyond the excitation energy of these reactions. But the fusion neutrons are of 14 MeV. That is why isotopes like Mn-54 and Na-22 are found in significant [not trace] quantities in the rock samples from the thermonuclear device site rock samples.”

“If one sees the gamma-ray spectrum of a typical rock sample of the thermonuclear test site, published in refereed journals by BARC scientists, sharp peaks for these radioisotopes are seen, not just bumps in the background! In the Mn-54/Ce-144 ratios from the samples of the two test sites, reproduced by R. Ramachandran in his Frontline article of 25th September 2009, this ratio for the thermonuclear test samples is seen as a high multiple of the ratio for the fission test samples.”

Mr. Chidambaram pointed out, that Dr. Iyengar, in his contention made in 2000, had not disputed the yield of the thermonuclear test. However, he said: “We do not understand, how, without knowledge of the design and, therefore without knowledge of the fusion-fission break-up and the quantity of thermonuclear material in the device and its isotopic composition, he [Dr. Iyengar] has tried to calculate the efficiency of fusion burn.”

Chandrayaan-I finds traces of water on moon

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Chandrayaan-1 probe had found traces of water across the surface of large parts of the moon, challenging the long-held view that the earth’s natural satellite is bone dry.

The spacecraft also found indications that water is being produced in the lunar soil through interactions with charged particles streaming out from the sun.

This major discovery is a vindication of the Chandryaan-1 mission, which encountered many problems and finally ended abruptly last month.

The Moon Mineralogy Mapper (M3), a U.S.-supplied instrument that flew on the Chandrayaan-1, examined the intensity of different colours of sunlight bouncing off the lunar surface.

In a paper being published online this week by Science, American and Indian scientists report that the instrument found a distinctive signature of water and hydroxyl emanating from the moon. (A water molecule is made up of one oxygen atom linked to two hydrogen atoms, while hydroxyl has the oxygen atom attached to just one hydrogen atom.)

The M3 discovered the signature of water and hydroxyl on the surface soil and rocks at many diverse places in sunlit regions of the moon. The signature was stronger at the higher latitudes. Two U.S. space missions, Cassini and the Deep Impact spacecraft, had provided supporting evidence.

“We’ve made a very important step with this discovery,” said Carle Pieters of Brown University in the U.S., principal investigator for the M3. But “when we say ‘water on the moon,’ we are not talking about lakes, oceans or even puddles. Water on the moon means molecules of water and hydroxyl that interact with molecules of rock and dust specifically in the top millimetres of the moon’s surface,” she cautioned in a press release issued by the university.

What was detected was water molecules present in extremely minute quantities on the surface soil and rocks, noted J.N. Goswami, director of the Physical Research Laboratory in Ahmedabad and principal scientist for the Chandrayaan-1. He estimated that less than a teaspoon of water could be squeezed out from several kg of lunar soil.

The widespread distribution of water seen by M3 was “a complete surprise,” said Lawrence Taylor of the University of Tennessee in the U.S., one of the authors of the paper. Scientists have begun finding signs of water in some lunar minerals, he told this correspondent.

Carving his own identity

Immensely inspired by the stories from India’s cricketing history, narrated by his grand uncle, Jaideep spent the better part of his teen years aspiring to represent the country.

Today, almost a decade and a half after a thumb injury shattered his dream of playing Test cricket, Jaideep enjoys an identity of his own in cricketing circles.

Hailing from the erstwhile ruling family of Muli in Saurashtra, this 34-year-old owner of Beyond Boundaries that specialises in sports travel, conceptualised “Cricket on Snow” — an event held on the country’s Independence Day in the Bernese Alps at Jungfraujoch, in Switzerland.

The resounding success of this event and the word-of-mouth publicity from the celebrities involved surely gave Jaideep the boost he richly deserved. What more, Jaideep’s idea that the Indian players, holding the tri-colour, and those in the crowd should sing the National anthem in the Alps, gave all present a truly unforgettable moment filled with pride.

For someone who left key posts in AT&T and Reliance Infocomm to remain close to the game he loved, Jaideep pulled off a coup of sorts in his latest endeavour. He managed to get names like Mansur Ali Khan of Patuadi and his actress wife Sharmila Tagore, Farokh Engineer, Kapil Dev, Ajay Jadeja, Sandeep Patil, Aunshuman Gaekwad, Syed Kirmani, Alvin Kallicharran, Collis King, John Emburey, Chris Broad, Geoff Howarth and Neil Radford — most of them with their spouses — on board.

Talking of the concept and the constraints faced in its execution, Jaideep says, “the biggest problem was making the Swiss understand the work needed to be done. Since they did not know anything about cricket, diagrams of a cricket field and pitch had to be prepared and explained in great detail.

“The biggest challenge was the making of the pitch. Once I had finalised the playing area, the locals did a great job of levelling and making it firm. The wooden base for the pitch for even bounce and the choice of a tennis ball were carefully planned. But till I came here and checked the bounce myself, I was a bit apprehensive,” was the candid admission from Jaideep.

Plastic stumps, standing on a heavy acrylic base, ensured that the wickets stood firm even in windy conditions. A thoughtfully designed portable scoreboard helped the spectators keep track of the scores.

Overall, logistically, it was a job well done. “I must admit, I was a bit wary of things going wrong since the show was put up in less than 45 days. If everyone thinks it was a success, I owe it to Nupur, my wife, and all those who worked behind the scenes in India and Switzerland,” acknowledges Jaideep in all humility.

An upbeat Jaideep and Nupur are now keen to build on this concept and make it an annual feature. With the success story of “Cricket on Snow” forming the backdrop, players, sponsors and other stakeholders will be keen to be part of the next venture when it weaves cricket and nostalgia with camaraderie being a natural ally at another exotic venue.

Playing on the top of Europe

Cricket has transcended many boundaries, charmed several generations and stayed atop the priority list of millions of sports lovers across the globe.

Novelties have only added to the charm and following of this game. If Kerry Packer experimented with day-night contests in the 1970s, it was Abdul Rahman Bukhatir who brought the sport to the desert destination of Sharjah in the early 1980s.

These days, with Twenty20 threatening to give instant gratification to the game’s addicts, beach cricket is enjoying a ‘captive’ audience of its own.

On India’s Independence Day, cricket made its debut on snow, that too, at an altitude of 11,333 feet at the highest point of the Bernese Alps at Jungfraujoch, Switzerland.

A select six-member Indian team, comprising skipper Kapil Dev, Aunshuman Gaekwad, Sandeep Patil, Roger Binny, Syed Kirmani and Ajay Jadeja faced an All Stars team consisting of captain Alvin Kallicharran, Collis King, Geoff Howarth, Chris Broad, John Emburey and Neal Radford.

The aim of this initiative was to use cricket as an incentive to attract tourists, particularly from India, to Switzerland. In fact, the number of Indian tourists visiting this picturesque destination is next only to those from Korea and Japan.

Surely, no other sporting activity gets the attention of the Indians as cricket does. So the choice of discipline was right. But the challenge lay in making a “pitch” on the carefully identified “field” that was around 100 metres in length and 70 metres in width. A wooden “pitch” covered by a green mat was put in place. A custom-made tennis ball, heavier than usual, replaced its leather counterpart.

Once it became clear that despite the odd set-up, the “bounce” was going to be even, the players looked ahead to the contest. Indeed, the players were not expected to fool around and make a mockery of it all.

Both Kapil and Kallicharran minced no words when talking about their approach to what was otherwise considered a “fun event.”

Kapil said, “I’ve always played my cricket with intensity. Once I wear the kit and enter a cricket ground, I play to win. I am sure it is going to be fun playing in such a beautiful setting. Never thought cricket will bring all of us here. It will be great to win here.”

Kallicharran, who was keen to play a 10-over-a-side game instead of five, was of the view that “fun lies in winning. If you try to give your best every time, you want to win every time.”

As expected, during the game, no quarter was given. With the teams agreeing to retire any player who scored 21 runs or more, it became certain that most players would get to bat. And it did turn out that way.

Opting to bat, India lost Gaekwad early, but still managed to reach 108 with Jadeja (26), Kapil (26) and Patil (25) doing their job before “retiring”. Binny and Kirmani remained unbeaten on 12 each.

At the changeover, Kallicharran wondered whether it was possible to score in excess of 20 runs per over.

As things turned out, the All Stars almost pulled it off after Collis King (26), the hero of West Indies’ 1979 World Cup final victory over England, Broad (26) and Radford (25) put the team on course.

Kapil’s economical penultimate over left the All Stars needing 38 runs off the last over, but the target looked achievable once Jadeja started the final over with a no-ball that was duly dispatched for a six.

Kallicharran kept hitting sixes off Jadeja and needed one more off the last ball to clinch the issue. However, the left-hander’s miscued pull only fetched a single. That left the Indians celebrating their four-run victory.

Backed vociferously by a good bunch of tourists, some curious, some excited but mostly Indian, Kapil and his men had given their fans an added reason to celebrate the Independence Day. The Indian triumph was made all the more special when the Indians in the crowd joined the cricketers in the middle to sing the National Anthem. This was indeed the most memorable moment.

After all, lesser mortals can only dream of joining Kapil and his spirited ‘Devils’ in singing the National Anthem at ‘Top of Europe’ on Independence Day!

Just when the Anthem was about to end, to the pleasant surprise of everyone, Kallicharran joined the players and let go a loud “Bharat Mata ki Jai”. This was surely the moment of the day for all present.

“You know, I never lose to India,” revealed Kallicharran and continued with a smile, “I look at it like this: When West Indies wins, I am obviously happy. And when India wins, I feel happy because I am an Indian, after all,” declared this devout follower of Sai Baba while adding to the flavour of Independence Day.

The two umpires also played their role to perfection. If the presence of former captain Mansur Ali Khan of Pataudi in the middle ensured order, former wicketkeeper Farokh Engineer provided some light moments. In fact, the respect “Tiger” commands from all the cricketers present was to be seen to be believed.

Even before the event got over, the players were enquiring from the gracious host, Jaideep Sinh Parmar and his wife Nupur, about the cricket destination for 2010. “We all would love to be part of this next year, too,” said Patil, with Gaekwad and Kirmani nodding in agreement.

“Believe me, this event is a great success,” certified Kallicharran and offered all help to make the next edition even bigger. Indeed, with a bit more publicity of this promotional match around Jungfrau, it could have attracted many more Indian tourists.

The two local partners of the event, Swiss Airlines and Jungfraubahen (Swiss Railways) did their best to keep the celebrity guests pleased. The well-organised cruise on Lake Brienz and excursion surely left everyone wanting to return for more.

“This one was a sure hit,” said Sony Abraham, Jungfraubahnen’s Mumbai-based representative and looked ahead to more Indians making it to the “Top of Europe” when the Jungfrau Railways offers tourists from India, Britain and Switzerland great deals in December 2009 and March-April 2010.

Meanwhile, cricketers, old and new alike, are eagerly awaiting the announcement of the next edition.

Hard-fought win

The Ambedkar Stadium was seized by loyal fans of Indian football on one of the finest nights that Bhaichung Bhutia’s team could have aspired for. The fans came in thousands, many with the tri-colour painted on their cheeks; girls, outnumbering boys, were among those who occupied the seats early.

Football was a rage that day in Delhi. The venue had seen such crowd way back in the 70s and 80s, but the audience then was predominantly from the old city. The character of the football audience has undergone a change. So has the image of Indian football, thanks to the victory at the 14th Nehru Cup.

The Nehru Cup was launched in 1982 and some of the stars who graced the Indian soil were Venancio Ramos (Uruguay World Cupper in 1986), Enzo Francescoli (Uruguay World Cupper in 1986 and 1990), Rinat Dasayev (erstwhile Soviet Union star and world No. 1 goalkeeper at one time), Wlodzimierz Smolarek (Polish great), Vasily Rats (Soviet Union World Cupper in 1986 and 1990), Jorge Burruchaga (Argentina, World Cupper in 1986 and 1990), Sergio Batista (Argentina, World Cupper in 1986 and 1990) and Igor Belanov (Soviet Union, 1986 European Footballer of the Year). It was an exalted event in Indian football calendar until 1997 when it was abruptly stopped.

The tournament was revived 10 years later to boost Indian football and chief coach Bob Houghton was its architect. He assumed responsibility for drawing up a plan that ensured India would not take on teams that are placed too high in the FIFA rankings. The 2007 edition saw India win in style against a tough Syria. The result was repeated this time when Syria looked the better team but India emerged the champion.

The scenes at the Ambedkar Stadium captured the mood of the fans. They had come to back Indian football and the stunning victory, thanks to an inspired Subrata Paul under the bar, was a tribute to the faith that the supporters had reposed on their heroes.

The overflowing Stadium, with a capacity of 17,000, was a wonderful sight. A riot of colours formed the background even as desperate fans, unable to gain entry to the venue, rushed to the adjacent Ferozeshah Kotla to grab every possible space. Credit to the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) authorities for allowing football fans the access to one of the stands that gave them a clear view of the football pitch.

Houghton was the driving force that propelled the players to the top. All he wanted from them was to give “100 per cent” and the Englishman was not disappointed. The team played within its limitations but some of the “boys” performed beyond themselves to carve a victory against heavy odds. Syria was the favourite even as Kyrgyzstan, Sri Lanka and Lebanon offered challenges at various stages.

That it was an all-Asian tournament hardly mattered to the fans. The younger generation has grown up watching some fascinating stuff at the world stage on television but are prepared to give Indian football too a place in their heart. Only, it needs to be consistent. Football, once a game of the masses, had faded in terms of support but the Nehru Cup win should go a long way in restoring its popularity.

Not many gave India a chance after it lost the opening match to Lebanon. The build-up for the tournament had been exemplary, thanks to Houghton, who took the team to Dubai and Barcelona. The pre-event hype was thus understandable. “Never had the team taken such professional measures to prepare for a tournament,” remarked Bhaichung Bhutia. His remarkable partnership with Houghton and the healthy understanding between the coach and his players meant there was reason to expect a resurgence of Indian football. It was triggered by Bhutia, who was to be adjudged the Man of the Tournament.

India played like a cohesive unit after the shocker against Lebanon. The home team was done a huge favour by Sri Lanka, which tamed Lebanon 4-3. In a memorable performance, Sri Lanka sank three goals in the span of 10 minutes to destroy Lebanon, which had come with high hopes. Mohammed Issadeen was the star of Sri Lanka’s victory with three spectacular goals.

But Sri Lanka flattered to deceive. It suffered losses against Syria (0-4), India (1-3) and Kyrgyzstan (1-4) and finished last in the standings. Lebanon ended up a rung higher while Kyrgyzstan took the third spot.

Team India managed the unthinkable against all odds.

The clash for the title did not quite meet the technical excellence expected from the teams but it did satiate the desires of Indian supporters.

“India was lucky to win the final,” lamented the Syria coach Faser Ebrahim. He had issues with the officiating too. But then India won fair and square in a contest that went the distance. It was 0-0 at full time; 1-1 after extra time and finally 6-5 via the sudden-death and India’s hero was Paul, whose towering presence under the bar was so crucial.

India would have had a hero in Renedy Singh, who buried Syria with a goal in the 114th minute. Fate, however, played a hand. Syria snatched the equaliser with barely 20 seconds from the final whistle. It was a terrible tactical mistake by India, which lost possession near the Syrian goal and a stunning counter-attack saw Ali Dyan score with a header. Thereafter it was Paul all the way as he pulled off three penalty saves.

Thanks to the win, India moved up seven places in the FIFA rankings, from 156 to 149. Syria maintained its position at 95 but Lebanon slipped from 148 to 150. The surprise came from Kyrgyzstan. It lost two matches and yet ended up at 143, which was 17 places above its pre-tournament ranking. Sri Lanka too dropped three places to 159.

As the crowd melted, Houghton commented at the post-match Press conference. “We can match any Asian team at this venue.” He was lavish in his praise of the magnificent audience. About time the local football authorities gave a serious thought to having a stadium of their own. It can be a fitting reward for Houghton’s good work with the team.

Fans and violence

The recent, horrific scenes of violence around the West Ham United ground at Upton Park, East London, on the occasion of their League Cup match against their deadly local rivals, Millwall, raised sinister memories of the not so distant past, when hooliganism seemed to be part and parcel of English football. All too often following the England team abroad: and leading to the appalling Heysel disaster of 1985 in Brussels, when 39 Juventus fans were crushed to death after bei ng attacked by Liverpool thugs.

The violence around Upton Park surged on for the better, or worse, part of six hours. There were simply not enough police to subdue it. Inside the ground, there was constant uproar, periodic invasions of the pitch by West Ham fans, vicious racist chanting by those of Millwall.

Immediately, there was talk of sanctions on both clubs, of action by the Football Association. Police were blamed for limiting the number of Millwall fans permitted at the game to a mere 2300; as if a larger allocation would have made the slightest difference. The pitifully naive idea that the more Millwall fans allowed into Upton Park, the fewer there would have been to riot in Green Street and its environs was risible. Thousands of Millwall toughs, like their West Ham equivalents, came not to watch the match but to fight, with bricks, with bottles, with fists and feet. A hapless 44-year-old Millwall fan, there in the wrong place at the wrong time was stabbed while protecting his son. A 20-year-old West Ham thug was subsequently arrested. Yet, a mere 14 arrests were made by the police among the hundreds who ran riot. Though it was threatened or promised that further arrests would be made on the basis of video evidence. Yet, what good would that do? True, thugs can be banned from the grounds, but who is to stop them getting into matches when they want to? Unless they have to report to police stations each Saturday.

The fact that much of the violence was pre-planned seems beyond doubt. But then again anyone who knows the hooligan scene and its brutal history could have told you that must happen. Such confrontations between hooligan supporters are all too frequently pre-planned, though usually in places carefully selected away from the grounds and therefore ideally away from the police who, it is hoped, would thus not be able to interfere. Yet, knowing all this, what possessed the Metropolitan Police to allow this powder keg of a game to go ahead in the first place? And having so foolishly allowed it, why were there so relatively few police to deal with it?

On some occasions, the police and the authorities can hardly predict violence. There was such a case a couple of years ago when Millwall, at home in their relatively new Bermondsey stadium, played hosts to Birmingham City in a game which would decide which team would be promoted to the top division. As it transpired, Birmingham, the visitors, unexpectedly won it and the riot which ensued was vicious in the extreme. I knew all about it because my son Mark, an expert in football hooliganism who has written a book largely about it, though he also has an Oxford classics degree and was for years an opera singer, was in the middle of the chaos, telling me over his cell phone what was happening. The outnumbered police, he said, behaved with astonishing bravery.

But then Millwall fans, in the vernacular, have a record as long as your arm. West Ham’s fans goodness knows are no angels. Their hooligan element, self-styled ‘The Inter City Firm’, have been notorious for their violence. They even had visiting cards made to be left on their victims. And some of them were certainly involved in the battles of Upton Park.

Millwall, however, hard though, over the years, their club authorities have tried to stop it, have a record of fan violence which goes right back to the 1920s, when their ground was periodically closed after riots. They began as a club close to West Ham in East London, but, in 1910, they moved to south east London in a ground somewhat appropriately located in Cold Blow Lane and known, since Millwall were nicknamed The Lions, as The Den. It was a rough, tough Docklands area, and ‘The Den’ became notorious over the years for pitch invasions during games. Curiously, Millwall were the last of the 11 London League clubs to get into the top division, but when they did, belatedly, do so, it was with some style and success, notably with the productive goal getting partnership up front of the England International to be, Teddy Sheringham and the Ireland international, Tony Cascarino. Since then, alas, they have sunk into the lower reaches of the League. The docks no longer exist, the tradition of violence does.

Perhaps one of the worst, quite recent, examples of Millwall fan violence took place outside London when Millwall were up against the Bedfordshire club, Luton Town. Not only the Millwall hard cases but ruffians from all over London converged on the Kenilworth Road ground, and the subsequent violence was appalling.

What should be grasped about the recent abominations at Upon Park is that they were not, in any sense, a “one off.” Football violence has not been eliminated from English football. It has simply, so to speak, gone elsewhere. Away from the stadiums, where it was so horribly evident in the 1970s and after, simply because the police, with their CCTV cameras, could keep such tight crowd control inside the grounds. So fans who wanted to fight, as, alas, so many of them did, were largely obliged to do it elsewhere. Millwall’s, whatever the club tried so admirably to do about it, and despite the disappearance of the docks themselves, continued to be ferocious and formidable. As indeed, did those of Liverpool who, when Manchester United and their fans visited Anfield would turn their city into a cauldron of hatred.

Though to be fair, Italy has been as bad and worse: as English fans have all too painfully experienced, when their clubs visit Rome and are all too frequently stabbed in the buttocks.

Indeed going back to 1985, you might say that at the bottom of the appalling Heysel disaster was the brutal attacks with chains and knives of young Roma fans on Liverpool’s after Liverpool, on penalties, had beaten their team in the European Cup Final of May 1984.

West Ham, meanwhile, though they can hardly be held responsible for what happened so appallingly outside their stadium, laid themselves open to disciplinary action by the authorities for what happened inside Upton Park: the pitch invasions in particular.

My feeling remains that any punishment would be hard on the Hammers, that the true culprits, be they the flaccid football authorities or the complaisant police, are the obvious ones, for letting such a game go ahead at all. Useless even to have played it behind closed doors, the thugs, in all probability would still have come. How about using a distant neutral ground? Newcastle, perhaps, in future?

States not to prune sales tax on ATF now

NEW DELHI: Tougher times may be ahead for the country’s air carriers as States on Saturday refused to prune their rates of sales tax on aviation turbine fuel (ATF), a commodity which alone accounts for more than 40 per cent of the total operational cost of airlines.

According to VAT (value added tax) panel Chairman and West Bengal Finance Minister Asim Dasgupta, the States also rejected the aviation industry’s demand to bring ATF under the ‘declared goods’ category mainly because no State government would then be able to levy more than four per cent sales tax on the jet fuel.

At present, the sales tax on ATF differs widely from State to State, ranging from a low of four per cent in Andhra Pradesh to a high of anything between 20 per cent and 30 per cent in several other States.

Speaking to the media after the VAT panel’s meeting on Goods and Services Tax (GST) here, Dr. Dasgupta said: “The mood of States is not to review the [sales tax] rates of ATF now, because we asked some hard data on policy of fixation of pricing of petroleum products. We have not got the response [from the Centre].” In particular, the panel had sought to know from the Centre certain aspects such as how ATF prices are fixed, the share of the fuel in the total operational costs of airlines and the like.

However, having received no response so far, Dr. Dasgupta said that the “consensus of the Empowered Committee of State Finance Ministers is that we do not want this [ATF] to be brought in the declared goods list” and this decision will be conveyed to the Centre “accordingly, duly, [and] appropriately”.

Incidentally, the stand taken by the State finance ministers at the VAT panel meeting on the issue of sales tax rate on ATF has come almost ten days after the setting up of a ministerial group to examine the impact of jet fuel prices on the airlines and suggest measures to cut the operational costs.

As of now, products that are of importance in inter-State trade or commerce are brought under the category of ‘declared goods’ and the list now includes items such as paddy, rice and other foodgrains, coal, cotton, iron and steel and LPG among fuel products. As for ATF, the fuel enjoys declared goods status when utilised for turbo-prop aircraft meant for short-haul.

Among other factors, high ATF prices owing to the steep sales tax levied on the fuel by various State governments is one of the prime afflictions of the aviation sector, especially because the share of ATF in the operational cost of airlines is much higher than the global average of 20-25 per cent.

While the average price of ATF in the entire Asian region as also London and New York is pegged at about Rs. 24,000-26,000 a kilolitre, its price in Andhra Pradesh stands at about Rs. 34,000-35,000 a kilolitre.

NIFT speciality centre in Coimbatore

COIMBATORE: The Union Government will establish a National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) speciality centre in Coimbatore, Union Minister for Textiles Dayanidhi Maran said here on Saturday.

Inaugurating the modernised facilities of four mills of National Textile Corporation (NTC) he said the speciality centre would be established in association with the State Government. The resources of NTC and NIFT would be pooled for the benefit of the textile units in this region. NTC would give seven acres of its surplus land to set up the centre and would host the Centre for Apparel and Textiles Studies. The speciality centre would cater to the needs of the local textile industry by providing design, technology and management inputs.

The NTC had modernised the four mills at a cost of Rs. 76.50 crore. Already two NTC mills here were modernised. He urged the NTC to modernise its retail outlets too to revive sales. A technical textiles manufacturing facility would be established in one of the NTC units here. The NTC would make a study on the potential of various technical textile products and soon prepare a project report, he said.

Union Minister of State for Textiles Panabaaka Lakshmi said the Ministry was organising seminars to create awareness on technical textiles. The modernised NTC mills would produce value-added products for domestic and export markets.

Secretary, Union Ministry of Textiles, Rita Menon, said that in an effort to help the NTC market its products, the Textile Ministry was trying to see if the corporation could supply to the Railways and for the commonwealth games.

Earlier, speaking at the platinum jubilee celebrations of the Southern India Mills’ Association here, the Minister said a solution would be found soon to the pollution problem of the textile units in Tirupur.

The Ministry had received representations from the stakeholders about the duty drawback rates and the need for measures to improve the export competitiveness of the Indian textile units. India, South Africa agree on road map to enhance trade ties

NEW DELHI: Union Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma on Saturday called on South African President Jacob Zuma in Pretoria and pledged to expand and diversify trade ties with the African nation to give a new dynamic dimension in the coming years.

Mr. Sharma, who is on an official visit to South Africa from August 20 to 24, conveyed the greetings of the Indian leadership to Mr. Zuma and congratulated the African National Congress on its resounding victory in the elections under his leadership. Mr. Zuma also conveyed his felicitations to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi on their success in the Indian elections and described the successful elections in both countries as a step towards strengthening democracy worldwide.

Both sides agreed on a roadmap to enhance bilateral cooperation in several key sectors, including cooperation on security issues and in addressing international terrorism. Mr. Sharma reiterated that the Indian leadership was looking forward to the visit by President Zuma to India early next year, which would give an added impetus to the relationship.

Both Mr. Zuma and Mr. Sharma also discussed measures to deepen and diversify the bilateral relationship through a newly energised economic and commercial partnership building on the existing complementarities. Mr. Sharma briefed the South African President on efforts by the Ministries of Trade and Industry on both sides to enhance the quality of business-to-business interaction through an interaction between CEOs in connection with his visit. It was agreed that India would share its experience in rural development and employment generation and a delegation led by the Minister of Rural Development of South Africa would visit India in the near future in this regard.

They also emphasised the need for both countries to work together to address contemporary global challenges, including the economic crisis and the need to make international political and economic institutions more democratic and representative of contemporary realities of the 21st Century. He also informed Mr. Zuma on India’s initiative to host a Ministerial meeting in New Delhi on re-energising the Doha Development Round of WTO at which the South African Trade and Industry Minister would also take part. Mr. Sharma later met Maite E. Nkoana-Mashobane, Minister for International Relations and Cooperation of South Africa. He also called on the Deputy President of South Africa, Kgalema Motlanthe, on Friday. He also addressed a meeting of the India Business Forum in Johannesburg. He will hold bilateral meetings with his counterpart, Minister of Trade and Industry, Rob Davies, on August 24.

After getting positive box office reports and reviews from all over the country, an elated director Vishal Bhardwaj celebrated with his three close friends — Anurag Kashyap, assistant Abhishek Chaube (who has turned director with the Naseeruddin Shah-Arshad Warsi-Vidya Balan film, Ishqiya) and casting director Honey — by holding a party over the weekend where everyone had a good time.

Chunky’s Italian job

Whether as a hero (Aankhen) or a character actor (Paying Guest), Chunky Pandey has a strong connection to comedy. Believe it or not, the funster is now playing an Italian in Sajid Khan’s Houseful. The actor says: “I play an Indian-Italian, who is the waiter-cum-manager-cum-entire-staff of a hotel. I talk in typical Italian style with lots of phrases such as ‘mama mia’ and ‘pleaseooo’.” Though Chunky says “It was great fun”, he has some changes planned. The actor insists, “I want to concentrate on some serious roles now. No more comedies hereafter, ‘grazie’ very much.”

How it happened

As a student in Kerala, my school wanted me to do something novel. So, I learnt to dance Bharatanatyam wearing roller skates. I came first in inter-school competitions and also in National-level contests. My photos were published in newspapers, and I started getting calls from directors. I started off with the sister’s role in Pachakuthira (Malayalam). I played a lot of second leads before turning heroine. That was when I signed up for Kodaikanal (Tamil).

How it felt

My second film, Muniyandi Vilangiyal Moondram Aandu, directed by Thirumurugan, released before Kodaikanal. I saw the film in Bangalore where I was shooting for a Kannada movie. Posters of the film were put up all over the place, and my family and friends were delighted.

How life changed

Until a few years ago, I could go out by myself in any part of the country. Not any more, at least in the South. People walk up to me and tell me they appreciate my work. I love good food, but can’t eat whatever I want anymore — my mother is my diet doctor! Earlier, I could go out as I pleased; now, I need to dress up appropriately before I step out of home. Daunting task ahead of Australia

LONDON: Jonathan Trott’s hundred on debut left England eyeing a stunning Ashes triumph as it closed in on a series-clinching victory in the fifth and deciding Test at The Oval here on Saturday.

Australia, at stumps on the third day, was 80 without loss — needing 466 more to reach what would be a new Test record fourth innings victory total of 546.

The highest fourth-innings total to win a Test at The Oval is 263 for nine by England against Australia 107 years ago.

But openers Shane Watson (31 batting) and Simon Katich (42 batting) ensured Australia made a sound start to its imposing chase.

Trott’s 119 was the centrepiece of England’s second innings 373 for nine declared.

Trott, who was run out for 41 in the first innings, became the first England player since Graham Thorpe in 1993 to score an Ashes century on debut.

Andrew Strauss and Trott took the overnight total of 58 for three to 157 before the England captain was caught at slip off Marcus North for 75 shortly before lunch. It was Strauss’ second half-century of the match.

Admirable composure

Trott showed admirable composure on a pitch which held few terrors after 15 wickets had tumbled for 243 on Friday.

He drove the ball handsomely through the off-side reaching his 50 in the morning session from 89 balls.

After Matt Prior had run himself out for four, Andrew Flintoff came to the wicket to a standing ovation in his last Test innings.

He struck four quick boundaries but was caught at long-off for 22 trying to hit North out of the ground.

The noisy greeting that next man in Stuart Broad received seemed like a changing of the guard as England’s leading all-rounder. Broad turned the match with his bowling on Friday by taking five for 37.

Broad employed the same explosive tactics as Flintoff, crashing three boundaries off North in the 71st over, the last one registering the 400-run lead.

The first was a lofted straight drive, the second lifted over cover and then he swept through midwicket. This came after Broad was dropped on five by North off his own bowling.

North, who took over the off-spinning duties after Australia omitted specialist Nathan Hauritz, took four for 98 from 30 overs.

Ganguly to head Cricket Development Sub-Committee

KOLKATA: Former Indian captain, Sourav Ganguly, has been named as the Chairman of the newly created Cricket Development Sub-Committee with a view to raise the standard of the game in Bengal.

The high-profile Sub-Committee will also have three former India players, Arun Lal, Ashok Malhotra and Pranab Roy, as members. The Working Committee of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) decided this in its first meeting on Saturday.

The Sub-Committee will prepare a master plan for the improvement of the game at all levels. It will also have the advisory powers in all cricket-related matters and recommend measures to improve the standard of the game in the State.

The body has also been given powers to make recommendations on technical aspects of all tournaments and deal with issues on umpiring and finally will receive reports from the selectors (senior and junior) at the end of every season, assess the accountability of the selectors and make necessary recommendations to the Working Committee.

This apart the meeting formed 19 Sub-Committees. The senior, junior and women’s selection committees along with membership, women’s cricket and cricket committees will be former after September 15, said President Jagmohan Dalmiya.

Ojha, Das retained

The two sitting Assistant Secretaries, Naresh Ojha and Debabrata Das have been retained for a year and the house co-opted Prabir Chakraborty of Wari AC as a member of the Working Committee.

Mr. Dalmiya said that the renovation work at the Eden Gardens would begin by next week immediately after getting the clearance from the Defence Ministry.

“Kolkata Police has cleared the project and we have received the verbal clearance from the Army authorities. Once we get the written permission we will begin the work,” he said.

To a question on the CAB not being allotted international matches, the CAB President said he had a word with the Board chief Shashank Manohar.

“I told Mr. Manohar that the CAB cannot be penalised for somebody’s (read: Mr. Prasun Mukherjee, the immediate past President) mistake of signing a rotation policy that put the CAB at the 22nd position. I even told the President that the mistake had been detected and it should be rectified. He agreed to reply within three days,” Dalmiya said.

“When we did not get any reply, I again wrote to him and also had a word with the Board’s CAO who said the Board Secretary would be writing to the CAB soon,” he added.

Issadeen inspires Lanka to victory

NEW DELHI: An inspired Sri Lanka, spurred by three goals from M.N.M. Issadeen, rocked the tournament with a sensational 4-3 win against Lebanon in the Nehru Cup at the Ambedkar Stadium here on Saturday. It was Lebanon’s first defeat in two matches after the 1-0 verdict against India.

The weather was just ideal and the teams came up with some intense stuff. The tempo was set with some early aggression and credit to Sri Lanka for remaining positive right through. The result was an ideal reflection of Sri Lanka’s excellent performance.

The pick of the Sri Lankan lot was E.B. Chenna, the roving playmaker with a flowing mane. He was a relentless threat to the Lebanese defence. His presence created confusion in the opposition ranks and Issadeen, who scored the first, second and fourth goals, capitalised on his good work.

Racy encounter

Early indications of a racy encounter came when Chenna created the move for the first goal in the seventh minute. The ball was set rolling by Chathura Maduranga with a square pass and Chenna carried the move forward with an impeccable through pass for Issadeen to place it in style.

Sri Lanka enjoyed the lead for a mere two minutes as Mohmoud El Ali floated the ball precisely to Akram Moghrabi, who headed in comfortably. Lebanon scored again during injury time of the first half when Al Saad Ali strongly headed in a cross from Mohammad Korhani.

The red card to Moghrabi left Lebanon with ten men from the 41st minute and Sri Lanka exploited the situation. It pounded the Lebanon goal with a few well-constructed moves and came to scoring twice but goalkeeper Lary Mehanna thwarted the moves with his anticipation. However, a concerted effort by Sri Lanka left Lebanon gasping. Three goals in nine minutes brought the house down.

The equaliser for Sri Lanka came from Isadeen after Madurang’s shot was blocked by the Lebanese goalkeeper. Soon came another goal when Raumy Mohideen made no mistake off a crafty ball on the top of the box from Maduranga. Sri Lanka slammed one more when Issadeen beat the goalkeeper with a deft placement on the turn. Sri Lanka closed the contest on a sad note when D. W. Hettiarachchi was sent off for an infringement on Korhani.

The resultant penalty was converted by Korhani but Lebanon had run out of time.

Baichung Bhutia is the face of Indian football. He now confronts a grave situation where the team looks up to him for deliverance. He is familiar with such challenges. It is just that this one comes with India’s appearance in the tournament just a match old.

Having lost 0-1 to Lebanon, India must win against Krygystan on Sunday. A defeat could well mean end of the road unless providence shows the way.

Milestone beckons

Bhutia, who will be playing his 100th match (including friendlies), understands the gravity of the situation. “A lot depends on Sunday’s match. We have to win. I hope the ground condition would be better than the first match,” said the star player.

The Indian camp was unhappy with the tall grass in its match against Lebanon and chief coach Bob Houghton has been highly critical of the playing conditions.

India has a couple of worries ahead of the match.

Defender N.S. Manju, down with an ankle injury, paves the way for seasoned campaigner Mahesh Gawli while Deepak Mondal will replace Surkumar Singh, who is nursing a strained thigh.

A comforting thought for Bhutia is that Sunil Chetri will be assisting him from the word go.

“I am happy Sunil is in the starting line up,” said Bhutia. Chetri, who had played as a substitute in the last match, is expected to add teeth to the attack which will miss Sushil Singh, who twisted his ankle during practice on Friday.

Shopian case to be handed over to CBI

SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir government has decided to hand over the probe into the alleged rape and murder of two women at Shopian to the Central Bureau of Investigation.

Finance Minister Abdur Rahim Rather told the Assembly on Wednesday that the government intended “handing over the case to the CBI after consultation with the High Court.”

Earlier in the day, angry members drew attention to Tuesday’s report in The Hindu, which broke news that samples submitted by a Jammu and Kashmir Police Special Investigation Team for DNA tests had been fabricated.

Forensic experts at the New Delhi-based Central Forensic Science Laboratory determined that the samples, on which the rape investigation was based, had been obtained from women other than the victims.

Speaker Akbar Lone suspended question hour in the morning to allow a special debate on the DNA fabrication.

People’s Democratic Party leader Mehbooba Mufti initiated the debate by reading from the report in The Hindu, and argued that the government was complicit in a cover-up.

Despite repeated requests from the Speaker, Ms. Mufti did not commit herself on which agency her party wanted the DNA fabrication issue investigated. “Investigating agencies do not matter; it is the government’s intentions which matter,” she said.

Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader M.Y. Tarigami, however, demanded that the case be handed over to the CBI. He was joined by National Conference MLAs Saifullah Mir, Sajjad Kitchloo and Nazir Gurezi.

Demanding to know who was responsible for the forensic fabrication, Mr. Tarigami pointed to a series of errors in the investigative process. For a transparent investigation, the services of an independent agency were necessary. “The CBI may have its faults, but it is the premier investigation agency and has the resources necessary to get to the truth,” he said.

Draft Direct Taxes Code proposes moderate rates

NEW DELHI: The government on Wednesday proposed to tax income up to Rs. 10 lakh at 10 per cent, while under the existing regime this relief is limited to people with an income of Rs. 1.6 lakh to Rs. 3 lakh.

Income between Rs. 10 lakh and Rs. 25 lakh will be taxed at 20 per cent and earnings thereafter will attract a rate of 30 per cent, as per the draft of the new Direct Taxes Code that seeks to improve the efficiency and equity of the tax system by eliminating distortions in the structure, bringing about moderate levels of taxation and expanding the base.

Releasing the code that proposes to consolidate and amend the law relating to all direct taxes — income tax, dividend distribution tax, fringe benefit tax and wealth tax — and ultimately replace the Income Tax Act of 1961, Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee said that if a reasonable discussion took place on the draft code, a Bill could be placed in the winter session of Parliament.

The draft code proposes a new, substantially liberalised tax rate for individual tax-payers. For example, in the case of every individual other than women and senior citizens, the code does not propose to levy any income tax on a total annual income of up to Rs.1.6 lakh.

Slabs

The code proposes 10 per cent income tax if the total yearly income exceeds Rs. 1.6 lakh but does not exceed Rs.10 lakh. It proposes two other slabs: where the total income exceeds Rs.10 lakh but does not exceed Rs. 25 lakh and it proposes a tax of Rs. 84,000 plus 20 per cent of the amount by which the total income exceeds Rs.10 lakh; where the total income exceeds Rs. 25 lakh, it proposes Rs. 3.84 lakh plus tax at the rate of 30 per cent of the amount by which the total income exceeds Rs. 25 lakh.

Currently, the general income tax payer does not pay tax up to Rs. 1.6 lakh of income in a year. However, he pays 10 per cent tax on income between Rs. 1.6 lakh and Rs. 3 lakh, 20 per cent between Rs. 3 lakh and Rs. 5 lakh, and 30 per cent beyond Rs. 5 lakh.

“We expect to have better compliance and better collection of taxes. The attempt is to simplify the language to enable better comprehension and remove ambiguity to foster voluntary compliance,” Mr. Mukherjee said.

Promise kept on recovery of black money: Manmohan

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday told the Rajya Sabha that the government had initiated action to bring back unaccounted money stashed away in banks abroad.

In a brief response to a question by Prakash Javadekar of the BJP on the Congress promise during the election campaign to get back the money within 100 days, Dr. Singh said that “action has already been started” by his government.

Dr. Singh referred to the statement of Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee on Wednesday, while responding to the debate on the Finance Bill. The issue dominated the poll campaign, with both the Congress and the BJP taking a tough stand.

Mr. Mukherjee told the House action was taken within 100 days. The country, he said, was going to accept the code prescribed by the G-8 countries, by which the exchange of information would take place and the legal framework adopted for the avoidance of double taxation.

The Finance Minister said every country had its own set of rules and countries like Switzerland had their own banking secrecy rules. However, in the context of the financial crisis, Switzerland had agreed to share information provided there was a legal framework and proof that such information was needed for tax collection and not for any other purpose.

“Therefore, action to bring back the money, which has been stashed away, is also being taken,” the Minister said.

T.Nagar shops still flout fire safety norms

Chennai: Many well-known and large multi-storied commercial establishments in T.Nagar which routinely attract large crowds of shoppers and others still do not have mandatory fire safety measures in place, despite the Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services (TNFRS) having issued notice to them.

These establishments also violate the multi-storied building rules that require sufficient side open space to facilitate firefighting and rescue operations.

Following a major fire accident in Saravana Stores in the area in September 2008, the TNFRS issued notices to more than 1,500 commercial establishments in the Chennai South Division, including in T. Nagar, instructing shopkeepers to install measures within 15 days. According to a government source, there has been no satisfactory follow-up action.

Even seven months after the notices were issued, many large shops have not installed either smoke detectors or sprinklers, it is found. At a well-known textile shop, this correspondent found that the fire exit sign led to a garment counter; and behind it was a closed door with an exit sign on it. Another emergency exit led to the toilet. The emergency staircase on the ground floor was restricted for use: a signboard on it read: ‘Entry restricted for staff.’

Garments were spread over fire extinguishers in another shop. Inside yet another popular showroom, not only were the doors leading to the emergency fire exits narrow, they were located at different spots on different floors.

R. Natraj, Director, Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services, told The Hindu that a drive is on to check the state of fire safety measures in large commercial establishments. Ten areas in the city – NSC Bose Road, Rattan Bazar, Purasawakkam, T.Nagar, Luz, Mylapore, Adyar, Vadapalani, Ashok Nagar and Valasaravakkam – have been identified as vulnerable.

“Teams with members well versed with fire safety norms have been constituted to inspect the mega-malls, shopping complexes, multiplexes and major restaurants,” the senior officer added.

Vaas the lionheart

The Sri Lankan fast bowler’s Test record illustrates his quality — 355 victims at 29.58 in 111 Tests. His team-mates would tell you tales about his sacrifice and toil; these cannot be measured in numbers, writes S. Dinakar.

Chaminda Vaas was a skilful Test match bowler; he also had the heart of a lion. The left-armer would bound in over after over, all sweat and commitment, always giving it his best shot.

The champion paceman has now drifted into the ‘Test’ sunset. He will be missed as much for his wicket-taking ability as his inspirational qualities.

Vaas’ Test record illustrates his quality — has 355 victims at 29.58 in 111 Tests in a career of miles and milestones. His team-mates would tell you tales about his sacrifice and toil; these cannot be measured in numbers.

The Sri Lankan would probe and test a batsman with each of his deliveries, making him play the ball; Vaas’ bowling was guided by precision. Control was a commodity he had in plenty. And he possessed the variations. Crucially, he could swing the ball back into the right-hander. The one angling across and the delivery darting in were delivered without any major changes in his position of release. Vaas had a quick-arm action, was not the easiest to pick.

Technically, there was plenty that was right about Vaas’ methods. His wrist and seam positions were ideal. An eager learner, he picked things up quickly.

If Vaas could move the ball both ways in the air, he could also get it to deviate off the seam. On wearing sub-continent tracks, Vaas often struck with his off and leg-cutters. He could also vary his pace and length and consume the batsmen on the drive.

In his earlier days, he was sharp and lively with an effective short-pitched delivery that struck the helmet of the hassled batsmen.

As the years rolled by, his pace dipped. When he played his final match, against Pakistan at the SSC ground following a surprise call-up for a dead-rubber Test, he was no more than military medium. Vaas, 35 now, competed hard. He was given a send-off of genuine warmth born out of respect.

Vaas’ role in Sri Lanka’s emergence as a strong cricketing force on the world stage is undisputed. His five for 47 and five for 43 on a green, seaming track in Napier, 1995, powered Sri Lanka to its first victory in an overseas Test. Lanka went on to clinch the series against New Zealand.

In Pakistan the same year, Vaas was influential in the Test series. His innings hauls of five for 99 at Peshawar, four for 45 in Faisalabad and four for 37 in Sialkot glittered in a historic 2-1 triumph for Sri Lanka.

Vaas had this uncanny ability to settle into his rhythm from the first over itself. He was a potent threat with the new ball since he comprehended the nuances of swing. Once the ball became older, Vaas could achieve reserve swing.

He teamed up with off-spin wizard Muttiah Muralitharan in a winning pace-spin combination. The batsmen would be under pressure from either end. Vaas would also create the footmarks for Muralitharan to exploit.

Few cricketers worked harder on the game and fitness. Former Lankan physio Alex Kountouri made Vaas the leader of the pack during on-field training. Dav Whatmore, the then Lankan coach, would never be short of words of praise for Vaas. For the support staff, Vaas was Mr. Perfect. He pushed himself, raised the bar.

He was a captain’s dream too. Vaas could send down long spells and would come steaming in at the end of a long, hard, tiring day under the scorching sun. He was strong physically and retained his levels of intensity — essential attributes for Test match bowling.

In fact, Vaas relished duels with the batsmen, and would work on their technique and patience. He was smart at changing the angles and used the crease effectively.

The left-armer bid adieu from Tests at his favourite hunting ground — the SSC. It was here that he ambushed the West Indian line-up in 2001 with efforts of seven for 120 and seven for 71. And it was here that he destroyed the South Africans with six for 29 in 2004. As many as 12 five-wicket hauls illustrate his worth as Sri Lanka’s most successful paceman.

Vaas’ batting — he has 3089 runs at 24.32 with one hundred — added weight to Lanka’s lower order. He was a feisty left-hander who could strike the ball a long way. Temperament was his ally.

As his career progressed, Vaas developed a relatively effective defence and often proved hard to dislodge. Several Lankan fightbacks have been scripted around Vaas’ batting. As in other aspects of his game, Vaas was a braveheart with the willow.

Vaas wishes to continue in ODI and Twenty20 cricket till the 2011 World Cup. Given his serious slump in pace, the odds, at the moment, are stacked against him with a bunch of younger, quicker pacemen buzzing around in the Lankan scene.

Yet knowing Vaas, you can never ever count him out. The man has steel in his bones.

After 75 long years…

Having tip-toed to a draw in the first match and won the second, England are in the ascendancy in their bid to repeat the glory days of 2005, writes Ted Corbett.

It was the greatest of all goodbyes, yet another example of the way Andrew Flintoff has dominated England for the last 10 years and another reason to be sad because we are seeing the last of this sunny giant.

Flintoff, bowling a stream of deliveries at more than 90 miles an hour and at the same time showing the control that has made him a magnificent defensive bowler as well as a wicket-taker, bowled throughout the last session of the second Test at Lord&# 8217;s.

Other England players had a part in this famous victory — the first by an England side against Australia at Lord’s for 75 years when the country’s present Monarch was a little girl, when television was a distant dream, when the internet did not even have a name — but Flintoff was the hero.

Amazingly, since he announced two days before the match that he would not play Test cricket after this season, there have been a succession of stories, hints and rumours that (a) he would not play again after the second Test, (b) that England would not miss him and (c) that he has made the announcement as part of a plot to be at the centre of every celebration.

There was even a suggestion that it was part of a publicity ploy to remind a gullible public that he was about to publish another book and that, hey, he has not been that great an all-rounder after all.

How little some people understand this game!

The point about Flintoff has never been that he would hit a succession of big scores or take a mountain of wickets like a Glenn McGrath or an Ian Botham.

His career was just as important for his spirit, the inspiration he brought to the team, the grin on his face, his gentle — yes, gentle — sledging.

When Flintoff is remembered I hope it will be as a man who showed that in this hustle and bustle 21st century, with its emphasis on victories and cash and awards, it could still be played as it was in the Golden Age.

The Flintoff way — despite all those debilitating injuries, ill-luck, skirmishes with authority, an unsuccessful England captaincy, a regular indulgence in drink and an attempt to row round the Caribbean in a pedalo — was to play principally for fun.

All right, it was serious fun, with the intention of winning, and making a lot of money and milking the applause. But a large part of the time was devoted to respect for opponents, for a sense of the way the game should be played.

A very modern Flintoff understood and obeyed the principles of that old-fashioned expression “It’s not cricket.”

He desperately wanted to win, to be on top of the batting and bowling averages, to have his name on the honours board and to hear the crowd roar his name.

He hated missing games, going through the process that followed his numerous operations and training and retraining.

But, whatever else has been said to his discredit — and his critics have come rushing out of the woodwork in the last few days — no one has ever accused him of being small-minded.

Flintoff was — from the moment Bobby Simpson first set eyes on his ferocious blows, from the minute David Lloyd first thought “hey up this lad can bowl a heavy ball and hit a big six” — a natural cricketer.

I first set eyes on him in a cup-tie with Lancashire where he took the final catch, aged 19, after a long run round the boundary, with such casual nonchalance that we had the impression of a child of nature let out to play.

We saw all these aspects of his character in the second Test at Lord’s which England won just before lunch on the final day when you could not drag yourself away lest the impossible happen and Australia win by one wicket with a couple of balls of the final over left.

It did not happen; mostly because of Flintoff.

England won the toss and batted. Andrew Strauss and Alistair Cook put on 199 for the first wicket, Strauss went on all the first day to 161 and the rest did not give them adequate backing but England still managed what should have been a winning score of 425.

Andrew Strauss gave the new ball to Flintoff and James Anderson and the effect from Flintoff grew on Australia throughout the match.

Anderson, who is reputed to bowl better when he is leader of the attack, took second place to Flintoff but put on a great exhibition of fast swing bowling and had four wickets for 55.

Australia were blasted out for 215 and Strauss decided against enforcing the follow-on but rather piled up the runs so that on the fourth morning he could declare at 311 for six, leaving Australia to make 522 to win.

Impossible? Of course. Well, yes, but Australia went for this unusual target as if they had every intention of winning.

Flintoff snapped up the first two wickets as he bowled seven successive overs at high pace and at their low point Australia were 128 for five. But their main hope lay with Michael Clarke who, in a remarkable interview before the day’s play began, had laid out a plan by which this record total might be reached.

“We intend to go for runs in a positive way,” he said, with a typical Aussie grin. You might say that was the Flintoff spirit as well and it is difficult to underestimate the tiny distance by which he failed to make the miracle work.

By the close of the fourth day Clarke — backed up by the gutsy Brad Haddin — had put together a stand of 185 — and Australia were only — what a word in the circumstances — 209 from victory.

I know that more than one England player slept badly, concerned that if Australia turned the impossible dream into reality they would look very foolish indeed.

Cometh the hour, cometh the man — and this time that man was Flintoff.

He did not allow Haddin to add to his score, he bowled Nathan Hauritz and Peter Siddle to put his name on the bowling honours board for five wickets. He is already on the batting board.

Graham Swann, sneaking to the wicket and bowling balls that look identical until you take liberties with one, got rid of Clarke when it was quite clear that dainty batsman still had a robust eye on 522 and finally Mitchell Johnson.

Of course the series is not finished as there are three Tests to play but having tip-toed to a draw in the first match and won the second, England are in the ascendancy in their bid to repeat the glory days of 2005.

For all his injuries Flintoff swears he will still be playing at the Oval when the final Test begins on August 20 and — if his current form is any indication — sweeping all before him.

Reviving Air India

Ailing Air India’s presentation to the Committee of Secretaries (CoS) speaks volumes of the plight of the national carrier. Thanks to the economic slowdown, the recession in the airlines sector, and the government inaction owing to the general election, Air India’s woes have multiplied. It has finally sought a massive Rs.20,000 crore bail out package from the Centre over a five-year period. For its immediate survival, it needs a capital infusion of about Rs. 2,500-3,000 crore, in addition to a loan of Rs.10,000 crore to tide over the crisis. Salaries to staff and employees have been held over or delayed and fuel bills have not been paid to the oil companies. But the core problems are still not addressed. Now that the National Aviation Company of India (NACIL) — born out of the merger of Air India and Indian Airlines — has formally sought assistance, the CoS, headed by the Cabinet Secretary, has driven home the message that “aggressive” cost reduction and “better” revenue management are imperative. After all, the government and the public should not be made to pay for the incompetence or inefficiency of the national carrier. A cost auditor is to be appointed by the airline to “monitor, review, and ensure” that the cost reduction and operational efficiency plans are implemented.

Providing an equity infusion of Rs.2,500 crore, or offering a loan of Rs.10,000 crore may not be an intractable problem. But the Finance Ministry, which will be the nodal agency to formulate the Air India relief package, has to take on the responsibility of ensuring that every rupee is properly spent and the airline does not come back for more all too soon. Given the downturn in the aviation sector and the fact that the merged airline has placed orders for 111 new aircraft to be delivered by 2012, pumping enough equity till then to enable it to borrow adequate amounts becomes inevitable. But the bottom line must be clear — Air India must shed its flab, cut down overhead expenses, stop freebies to the influential, pull out of uneconomic routes where possible, and function efficiently as a commercial enterprise, and not as an extension of the government. The government spends Rs.2,000 crore annually on official air travel and could as a reflex action insist that all government officials travel only by Air India even at the risk of being unfair to other airlines. There should be no bureaucratic interference in the day-to-day operation of the airline. A new board of independent directors must be appointed to steer the ‘Maharaja’ through the turbulent skies. The airline crew, staff, and the trade unions must cooperate in this difficult exercise.

Obama defends health reform plan

Washington: U.S. President Barack Obama on Thursday strongly defended his ambitious plan, calling it vital for recovering from the worst recession to hit the U.S. since the great depression.

“Even as we rescue this economy from a full-blown crisis, we must rebuild it stronger than before. And health insurance reform is central to that effort,” said Mr. Obama at a prime time news conference at White House, aimed at taking his case for health reforms to the people.

Mr. Obama’s nationally televised press conference comes as he has been facing criticism from the opposition Republicans for his decision to overhaul the health care system.

“This is not just about the 47 million Americans who have no health insurance. Reform is about every American who has ever feared that they may lose their coverage if they become too sick, or lose their job, or change their job,” said Mr. Obama.

“It’s about every small business that has been forced to lay off employees or cut back on their coverage because it became too expensive. And it’s about the fact that the biggest driving force behind our federal deficit is the skyrocketing cost of Medicare and Medicaid,” he asserted. Mr. Obama warned that if the spiralling health care costs are not controlled, the U.S. will not be able to control its deficit.

“If we do not reform health care, your premiums and out-of-pocket costs will continue to skyrocket. If we do not act, 14,000 Americans will continue to lose their health insurance every single day. These are the consequences of inaction. These are the stakes of the debate we’re having right now,” he said.

Criticism

Referring to the growing criticism against him, which has also pulled down his approval rating, Mr. Obama said: “I realise that with all the charges and criticisms being thrown around in Washington, many Americans may be wondering, What’s in this for me? How does my family stand to benefit from health insurance reform?”

Responding to his critics including Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal, who has come out on a series of news channels in the past two days, the President said: “Tonight I want to answer those questions.”— PTI

Herbal remedy for A(H1N1) flu in China

BEIJING: Chinese doctors say they have found a herbal remedy for preventing and treating the A(H1N1) Influenza which is both more cost-effective and better resistant to the virus than the drug Tamiflu.

Hospitals in Beijing have in the last month begun treating A(H1N1)-infected patients with this herbal remedy instead of the World Health Organisation-recommended Tamiflu, which is also being used to treat A(H1N1) in India. Doctors in two Beijing hospitals told The Hindu the results have so far been successful.

At Ditan hospital, where most of Beijing’s patients are being treated, doctors have treated 117 out of 297 admitted patients with the herbal remedy, and 88 of them have been cured. The others are undergoing treatment.

There have so far been 1,668 reported cases of A(H1N1) flu in China, though no deaths have been reported. The government’s Ministry of Public Health has expressed concern that as the winter flu season approaches, the chances of a serious outbreak are high. With some concern about Tamiflu’s decreasing resistance to the virus and fears regarding the drug’s side-effects, the government appears to have given full-backing to promoting a herbal treatment.

Meanwhile, two Chinese pharmaceutical companies this week have begun two month-long clinical trials for a vaccine to the infection.

In China, treatment and prevention of infections with herbal remedies as opposed to drugs — the practice is known as Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) — is common, and the cost-effectiveness of herbal cures has seen a popular resurgence in TCM in recent years.

TCM, mainly known overseas for its acupuncture therapies, is regarded as mainstream medicine in China, but not in the West.

The government has now sanctioned hospitals to launch TCM-based treatments for A(H1N1) on a large scale, Tu Zhitao, dean of the research and education department at the Beijing Administration of TCM told The Hindu. “We have found that Tamiflu is not sufficient, and it also weakens the body and has adverse affects on body tolerance,” said Mr. Tu.

“This treatment is a better alternative, and we have begun to promote this treatment among the public.”

Essential difference

Mr. Tu said the essential difference was that while the TCM remedy works to build up the body’s resistance in a holistic way, the Tamiflu drug focuses on attacking the infection.

The herbal treatment is a mixture of four locally-used medicinal herbs: Jin yin hua (lonicera japonica), Da qing ye (Isatis indigodica), Bo he (Mentha haplocalyx) and Sheng gan cao (Glycyrrhiza glabra). Doctors in Beijing first began using the remedy on May 15, treating patients with a combination of the herbal remedy and Tamiflu.

After successful trials, doctors have since June 15 begun prescribing only the herbal treatment. Ninety per cent of all A(H1N1) flu patients in China have been treated with a combination of the two treatments. Wang Yuguang, head of the Centre of Integrated Chinese and Western medicine at Ditan Hospital, said the treatment time for the herbal remedy was comparable with that of Tamiflu treatments. The big difference, he said, was the cost of the two treatments. The TCM remedy only costs between 10 and 13 Yuan (between Rs. 70 and Rs. 91) per day, while Tamiflu costs 56 Yuan (Rs. 392).

Mr. Wang said the herbal treatment was now undergoing clinical trials “to show concrete evidence that the treatment is scientific.”

He said the government had invested 10 million Yuan (Rs. 7 crore) in conducting a comparative study of herbal and Tamiflu treatments.

Mao Yue, president of the Ditan Hospital, said there was a “serious possibility” of a large-scale outbreak of the flu in the autumn and winter of this year, and that the government has already begun procuring enough herbs to treat a possible 2 million patients.

3,000 more war displaced to be resettled: Colombo

Colombo: The Sri Lankan government has announced that it has taken steps to resettle 3,000 more war displaced sheltered in the welfare camps in Wanni in August first week.

“All the arrangements are now in place to resettle the displaced persons,” said senior adviser to the President, parliamentarian Basil Rajapaksa, at a special meeting at Vavuniya District Secretariat on Thursday.

He said the government planned to resettle these persons in 35 cleared villages in Wanni region beginning August and the government has completed the demining activities of those villages with the assistance of international groups and the United Nations. The government will provide the basic requirements including dry rations to those to be resettled,.

Commitment

He reiterated his commitment to resettle at least 80 per cent of the IDPs prior to the December-end deadline.

Separately, the Air Force announced the commencement and schedules of domestic “commercial flight” to Jaffna, Sigiriya and Trincomalee.

Meanwhile, addressing a gathering of representatives of Women’s Organisations of the Moneragala District in the Uva province on Wednesday, President Mahinda Rajapaksa said he was prepared to appear before any Court on behalf of the military leaders.

“Some leaders were concocting stories against the military leaders. What the military leaders did was to heed my orders, as President of the country and the Commander-in-Chief.”

Internenews quoted Kilinochchi Government Agent as saying plans would start with 80,000 people being resettled in their native places. As per the Commissioner of Child Care and Probation Department, the reunification process of children with their parents is complete up to 50 per cent.

Indian “Internet predator” held in U.S.

Washington: In possibly the first such case involving an Indian in the U.S., police in Pennsylvania have arrested an Indian engineer on charges of using Internet for soliciting young girls for sex.

In a statement, the Pennsylvania Attorney General Tom Corbett said Nityanand Gopalika (30), here on a work visa, allegedly used an Internet chat room to approach what he believed was a 13-year old girl from the Pittsburgh area.

The “girl” was actually an undercover agent from the Child Predator Unit. According to the criminal complaint filed by the Attorney General’s Child Predator Unit, Gopalika engaged in a series of chats over several days questioning the girl about her sexual experience and describing the sex acts he wished to engage in. Gopalika is also accused of sending the girl two obscene web cam videos.

Gopalika was arrested on July 1 when he arrived at a predetermined meeting location.

Following a search of his vehicle, agents seized two laptop computers, a digital camera, a cell phone allegedly containing a partially completed text message to the “child,” directions to the meeting location and a bag of condoms. Gopalika was preliminarily arraigned on July 1 and lodged in the Butler County Jail in lieu of $15,000 cash bail, pending a preliminary hearing on Friday.— PTI
